Chumpwrecker is the breakcore and drum & bass project of North East U.K–based electronic musician Ian Hanratty. Known for his uncompromising hardware-only performances.

Chumpwrecker delivers a full-throttle assault of beats, distortion, and twisted synths—without a laptop or DAW in sight. Every set is built live on synths and samplers, bringing raw energy and unpredictability to the stage.

The project was conceived during the 2020 pandemic, when Hanratty’s guitar-based band was sidelined by lockdowns. Rather than wait it out, he immersed himself in hardware production, fusing breakcore, drum & bass, and punk-inspired aggression into a sound designed for the live arena. When the world reopened, Chumpwrecker hit the stage hard, quickly establishing himself across the U.K. underground.

His live résumé includes festival appearances at Resistanz, Solfest Firedance, and The Conjuring, alongside a run of support dates for Justin Broadrick of industrial icons Godflesh. On stage, Chumpwrecker channels influences ranging from The Prodigy, Orbital, Enduser, and Empirion through to the DIY ferocity of punk and metal acts like Discharge and The Exploited. The result is a show that is as visceral as it is electronic.

Recognized by Electronic Sound magazine as one of the U.K.’s most exciting electronic artists to watch, Chumpwrecker has released two records to date: the debut EP North East Beats, and a 7” vinyl on local label Butterfly Effect, featuring a remix from gabber legend Johnny Violent.

With a reputation for intensity, passion, and a no-compromise live ethic, Chumpwrecker is carving out a space where breakcore, drum & bass, and punk energy collide

Review

Thrash a speed beat over something a little reminiscent of an EBM intro and crack off a load of fireworks, and you miiight just get a picture in mind for 'Let The Beat Control Your Body'. It's speedy, it's chaotic, it's a little filthy, and it's a slap in the face to wake up and pay attention to this album and to indeed open your mind to losing yourself in the album.

'Anxiety' is fast, violent, urgent, messy in all the right ways keeping that starting energy going high. The riffy guitar in the latter half complimented by the break beat percussion makes this a real emotional outburster of a track.

'Straife (Scafolding Bones)' has the punk vocals you were waiting for and the track is that of anarchic fire. Broken, beaten, filled with emotion, this tracks is a reflection of the state of being, life, and mind in which it represents.

'Spoor (White Goldfish)' kicks off with a spicy guitar riff that reminds me of the first Resident Evil film. This soon gets joined by the same distorted plethora of pure chaos the album has made itself clearly made of by this point. Poetic vocals and gut punching guitar, the speed beats throwing you mind through an intense dance loop. One for the thrash-head bangers.

The final track 'Kodokushi' has a fantastic little synth intro of nostalgic subtlety which is later joined by a buzzsaw sound making this a damn good speed dance tune. At the second minute we are treated to some DOOM like riffs, and trance like high-synths, all whilst the speedbeat continues making for a satisfying twist of genres. The track then takes an unexpected further twist with a touch of rap, DnB, and retro squealing and power 80's soloing guitar.

What a damn impressive track!

Conclusion

Short, powerful, and fast as fk boi! Electronic Unrest by Chump Wrecker is a delicious offering of anger, chaos, and FUN!

It's an anarchist's playlist of electronic fuel pouring on to a fire and taking everything, everyone, and every genre - with it. Thrash your way to a smile with this brilliant release!

Thank you!
