GG Magree presents her debut album with Spit Love, and I for one am so, so happy I took the time to listen to this one and write about it. It is BY FAR one of the most iconic, and incredible albums not only of the year, but of the decade; See for yourself why I stand by that conclusion..
Producer, vocalist, and all-around musical vixen GG Magree releases her debut album, Spit Love, October 22nd via Rise Records/BMG as well as an unforgettable limited run of tour dates, with more to be announced soon.
“This album is everything they told me not to be,” she says. “But it isn’t just about me; it’s about rewriting the narrative for every woman, every queer person, every soul who’s ever been told they’re too much. So love yourself — hard. Own your story. And let the world choke on it.”
Indeed, Magree, who grew up in one of Sydney’s most historic gay clubs, learned to shed inhibition and embrace freedom early on. Her track and video, “Wet Dreams,” envisions a sex rave fantasy come to life with an all-LGBTQ cast and GG celebrating her bisexual identity.
Like its precursors, “Bleed” and “Run,” the first two songs and videos released from Spit Love, “Wet Dreams” continues the horror-filled narrative of a stripper played by Magree with a penchant for human flesh and blood. The story culminates with the short film SPIT LOVE.
“I make art that bleeds, screams, seduces and liberates. I don’t make music to be liked — I make it to be free,” says Magree. “A voice for the hyper-sexualized, abused and underestimated. For the woman told to ‘calm down’ and the queer kids told to ‘cover up.’”
ABOUT GG MAGREE
Like some kind of glittering love witch, GG Magree conjures sex and death to create lyrical alchemy — with a hefty helping of joyful sleaze. Whether it be her one-on-one convos with the spirit world, or a new film in which she cosplays as a cannibal stripper, the electro-punk-loving Aussie is channeling it all on her first full-length LP, Spit Love on BMG/Rise.
Magree grew up in the heart of the Australian club scene; her dad owned one of the more historic gay clubs in the country, and she was celebrating birthdays there well before it was legal. Rubbing elbows with the likes of Steve Aoki, the Bloody Beetroots, and scene photographer the Cobrasnake (she was his muse), Magree toured and collaborated with EDM star NGHTMRE (they dropped “Frontlines” with Zeds Dead in 2016) and performed on stages at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Ultra Music Festival. She’s channeled those electronic roots into heavy, powerful industrial sound in her new music.

Interview

Q. For those just discovering you, could you please tell us about yourself and your particular music expression as an artist.
A. “I'm GG Magree, born in Sydney, Australia, but I currently live in LA. I've been in the nightclub, rave, and music scene my entire life as my dad owned a bunch of nightclubs, strip clubs, and to this day, owns the biggest gay club in Australia. The first club I ever actually went to was his gay club called Stonewall when I was 13, and I remember seeing and being around drag queens for the first time and was like, ‘Yep, this life is for me.’” Later on, that experience formed my obsession with the club kid world.
“My artistic musical expression sits on the edge of love and horror. I want people to feel aroused and uncomfortable at the same time, because that is what being a human being feels like.”
Q. I love that you're a queer artist, and that you used a full LGBTQIA+ casting for the video of 'Wet Dreams'. The music industry can be so hard for queer people, and even just for femme artists in general.
Do you have any advice you'd think would be important to hear for those thinking about making a start in the music world?
A. “Honestly I think the best advice I can give is don't wait for permission. The industry will try and box you and tell you to tone it down; especially if you’re queer, femme or sexual. But the thing that makes you ‘too much’ is the exact thing that will set you free. Also surrounding yourself with people who get it and get you. Don’t ever shrink yourself to make people feel more comfortable. The world doesn't need more palatable art–it needs truth, chaos and individuality.”

Q. I also really like where you mention about yourself in the press release that 'The sound of rock, metal, and electronic music have always been in my veins' also that you don't fit into a particular box, and that your music IS YOU.
So which track on this album would you say is the most pure expression of who you are, and do you have other artistic forms of expression you enjoy?
A. “Mmm, I think it’s a mix between ‘Spit Love’ because that song makes me want to fuck the world and also ‘Siren,’ because sirens make me feel free. I'm very, very into pole dancing. I dance 3 times a week, and it's the only time I feel like I don't think about anything else other than my body and trying not to hurt myself, lol.”
Q. I can hear so many influences of music history that were important to me growing up, In some parts I am reminded of Slipknot,of Avril lavigne, and more recently notes of Bambi Thug as I listen.
Is there a particular band or artist that you are inspired by that you would love to pay homage to but don't feel you could quite do them justice just yet?
A. “Oh yesss! This German DJ and producer duo called Kalte Liebe! I’m obsessed with their music. We may or may not have a single coming out together, hehe.”
Q. Which song from this album was hardest to write, and which is the most emotionally taxing for you to sing?
A. “‘Forever’ - it’s about being in a toxic relationship which is either going to kill you or make you wanna kill yourself. It pays homage to my grandmother who I lost in a very tragic way when I was young.”
Q. Trauma is a clear part of some songs, do you feel you get a sense of healing, of remembrance, or even closure with these songs?
A. “I can happily say that this album has 100 percent shaped the human I am today. I kind of poured it all out on the table and really dissected who I am. Some days I would just sit in the studio and cry, and others I would want to punch everyone in the face. It was a crazy roller coaster, and I’ll be forever grateful for my co-pilot producer Duncan Murray. He really pushed me to figure out who the fuck I am, and damn, shit got MESSSSY for a minute.
At this current stage in my life I am the most grounded and powerful I feel I have ever been! And that's really all thanks to this album.”

Q. 'Siren' is my joint favourite with 'Wet Dreams', could you tell me the story of this track and what it means to you, as well as what you wanted the audience to feel with this one?
A. “I want people to feel like they are sex gods listening to ‘Siren’ as it really makes me feel hot, horny, and powerful. I love the chorus break downs so much. It reminds me of the 2000s trance. I’ve missed music like that so I'm so happy with how ‘Siren' turned out.”
Q. So you have recently released the Spit Love short horror movie to go alongside the album which features a lot of the music from the album, (I've seen it and it's great!)
So, can you tell us about the idea behind the film and what you wanted it all to portray?
A. “It was actually crazy how the short film came about. I had basically finished my album and then I met these girls, Shvwn Cooper and Buttons, and instantly we were like, ‘we're gonna make a short film with no budget in 3 weeks.’ So after being a fucking psycho and doing that, I was listening to my album that was ready to hand over to Rise Records, and then me and Ducan Murray went into the studio and wrote a song called ‘Wet Dreams’ which essentially unlocked a whole new wave and style of songs that I knew I needed to explore. Within 1 month I had written what ended up being the last 6 songs on my album, and it was then I realized the short film was a HUGE inspiration for this.
I kind of did everything backwards which was insane, but the short film was never actually supposed to be for my album.”

Q. What has been the wildest thing that's happened during a show or show night for you so far?
A. “I guess my fans always want me to spit in their mouth but,… I LIKE IT, hehe.”
Q. Anything you'd like to say to your fans?
A. “I hope this makes you feel sexy, powerful, and most of all, like you can be the truest version of yourself! I love you and thank you for giving me the space to live out my dreams.”

Review
'Sex' is a cinematic opening to the album, laying out an introduction of who GG Magree is with fierce lyrics delivered carefully, surgically to a slower tempo build up until the drums kick up the tempo for the final third of the track.
I like being a symbol.. Yea I'm fucking free, I am fucking free!
'Bleed' kicks straight off with a midtempo electronic vibe and then simmers with lyrics dripping with tension, teasing their target. The chorus throws in a great distorted guitar riff over that midtempo bounce. It's catchy, and one I'm sure has fans singing along loudly at shows.
The title song of 'Spit Love' brings in the femme rock and power in equal measure. This is a short song to throat punch you in to submission so you know that GG is the one truly in charge of the listener. 'Delicious Loyalty' straight off in vocal style reminds me of Flyleaf (Before they became problematic) The vocals are smooth, elegant, and enticing. The guitars and percussion add a slice of metal. There is a sense of anger and pain that scratches that headbanging itch. On to my joint favourite track now with 'Siren', this one is a higher tempo club banger! It has quieter moments to lure you in, then hits you with nostalgic rave electronics, not quite trance, not quite industrial, but kicking firmly with boot stomping beats. The chorus is damn satisfying, and the tempo is one that some may find a bit too fast to dance to but not me personally, the faster the better, and I LOVE this one. Make sure to listen to this one! 'Run' brings back more metal and instantly brings Slipknot to mind with the guitar introduction. Lyrically the songs reminds me of Avril Lavigne making this a song that is dripping with nostalgia, power, and Gods damn fun!
When GG says 'Run' and the guitars drop kicks back in, (what a breakdown!) I assure you, you will feel the need to start a mosh pit! The song only gets heavier as well with deeper black metal-esque electric guitar to wrap the track up with a fist.
'2 Hot 2 Handle - Feat. Silly Goose', is another high tempo electro bounce offering mixed with rap metal. (Think Limp Bizkit) It's fierce, fast, and a great addition of enjoyment and dance. I love the comical ending too. 'Wet Dreams' my other joint favourite!
When I was first emailed by Rhylee, the PR, with this video attached.. I had never heard of GG Magree before.
WELL, lets just say this track is now a regular play on my playlist, my partner's, and a few other friends since then. The video is.. spicy. The music, chorus, and masterful use of electronics is THE SPICIEST offering of musical goodness I have tasted in a long time.
I can't do this track justice with words, so hear it for yourself, trust me. I also can't stop singing the banging chorus (literally!), even in completely inappropriate places!
LISTEN. HERE. THIS VIDEO: (DONT YOU DARE SKIP IT.)
'It's a shame I'm not over you' is a BEAUTIFUL song. The crystal clear and smooth vocals full of remorse - but also passion at the same time, makes this a distinctly unique track, the sort that really sticks with you long after you've listened.
In a way the musical aspects of this song reminds me of an anime closing track, or the soundtrack to a late night meltdown, or even a long bedroom session - in equal measures.
A brilliant track all round with a burst of energy at the end to throw in a touch of manic dance.
Let's stay up all night and break each other's hearts.
'Dare you' is a gritter, darker, mental health dive in to the thoughts that those who are 'harder to love' dare not say out loud. The deep guitars pound out a slow tempo, almost Lovecraftian track. There's some real gold with these lyrics and another satisfying dose of metal, death, and sex.
Oohh, Trauma me and I'll trauma you right back, I'm hell on a leash, you don't wanna see me snap
'Forever' and 'Nightmares'.. These last two songs are softer sung tracks but sung from an absolutely ravaged heart. They reminds me again of Avril, and early 2000s emo but in no way is that a negative, these are songs only someone who has experienced a deep, shattering pain, and isolation can sing. I love these song. They stand out as so different from the rest of the album, and sparkle like jewels.. or a shattered mirror..
Forever feels closer when you let go
Conclusion
To be honest.. I'm in dumb-struck awe.
Spit Love is one of the most well rounded and finest crafted albums that I've had the privilege of listening to, combine that with this being the DEBUT album of GG Magree, and I think this release represents something truly special.
GG has done what they wanted to do, put forth the genres, media, concepts, and imagery they desired to.. Not what the capitalist world would tell her to.
When artists can truly find the space and execution to put out what their hearts' desire.. you inevitably have masterpieces, I have no other word for this album other than masterpiece.
With this album.. I feel nostalgia, I feel the grief, I feel the fun, the desire, the wanton abandon of hedonism, the trauma, the hope, and the strength, I feel the self belief in someone of genuine and true talent.. GG Magree is destined for worldwide stardom.
Thank you!
